What is Professional Indemnity Insurance?

Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) is mandatory for all dental practices registered with the General Dental Council. It protects both patients and the practice by covering:

  • Clinical Negligence Claims: If treatment falls below the standard expected of a dental professional
  • Complaints Defence: Legal costs of investigating and defending against complaints
  • Regulatory Investigations: Costs of GDC or CQC investigations into professional conduct
  • Patient Compensation: Compensation awarded to patients through the courts

What is NOT Covered

  • Intentional misconduct or fraud
  • Treatment falling outside your professional registration
  • Unlicensed or unregistered treatment
  • Breach of confidentiality without legal cause
  • Criminal activity

Minimum GDC Requirement

The General Dental Council requires a minimum insurance cover of £6 million per claim. Our practice maintains this cover at all times as a mandatory professional requirement.

Your Rights if Harmed

If you suffer harm as a result of our treatment, you have the right to:

  • Complain to our practice using our Complaints Procedure
  • Complain to the GDC, CQC, or NHS Ombudsman
  • Seek legal advice and pursue a claim for compensation
  • Claim under our professional indemnity insurance
  • Take a claim to Small Claims Court

Making an Insurance Claim

If you believe you have been affected by clinical negligence, you can:

  • Contact our Complaints Manager in the first instance
  • Speak to a solicitor specialising in dental negligence
  • Contact the Legal Services Board for a list of solicitors

Transparency & Trust

We maintain professional indemnity insurance to protect both our patients and our practice. This ensures that if something goes wrong, patients have access to compensation through our insurer rather than pursuing legal claims against the practice directly.

⚠️ Critical: Insurance must never lapse. The GDC will investigate practices operating without valid professional indemnity insurance cover.
